About the House

The People Behind the Mary Street Door

Quartz Harbour has been a two-room house on Mary Street since 1994 — dinner out front, cards through the back curtain, and the same family keeping both.

A Street With a Ledger

Mary Street Has Always Counted Something

The Mary Street frontage of Quartz Harbour by evening, verandah lamps lit above the old ledger-office sign.

Mary Street ran busy from the first gold finds nearby, and the building at number fifty-eight did the counting: wool bales in, gold receipts out, a ledger kept straight by whoever sat behind the front counter.

We took the lease over in 1994 and kept the counter, though these days it counts dinner covers instead of gold dust — Quartz Harbour still faces Mary Street the way the old agency did, verandah first.

Neighbours on either side have changed twice over the years; the building itself, and the habit of keeping careful count, has not.

1880s

The office was built to weigh and record goods off the Mary Valley wagons.

Family Run

Two generations of the same family have kept the doors since 1994.

Same Counter

The original timber counter still stands, now used for supper orders.

What Guests Ask About Us

Are you related to the family who ran the old agency?

No — we bought the lease in 1994 and simply kept the building's habits, not its ownership.

Do you cook every night you're open?

Yes, the kitchen runs every open night, Wednesday to Monday, right through to the last supper order.

Is the card room the main business, or the restaurant?

Neither leads — we run them as one house, on the level, side by side.
